A former POW in Vietnam Pete Peterson, who became the first postwar ambassador to that country, endorsed U.S. Rep. Jim Davis as the Democratic candidate for the governor. Peterson themselves was a Democratic candidate for governor in 2001. Speaking on a phone from Bangkok, he described Davis as ‘the right man at the right time to be Florida's next governor’. A former Air Force pilot, Peterson spent more than six years there as a prisoner of war, had being shot down over Vietnam. He was elected to Congress from Tallahassee in 1990 and appointed ambassador to Vietnam in 1997. Left that post in 2001, he considers to run for governor, but quit the race shortly after terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center. Davis appreciated Peterson's support, saying that it is proof of the growing support for his campaign. Peterson recently founded an organization ‘The Alliance for Safe Children’.
