Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, faced with the danger of continuing public protests against his leadership. He declaimed on Tuesday that he would resign his post despite his party's victory in parliamentary elections, taking place this Sunday. The surprise announcement was a sudden turn for Thaksin. He had sought for months to maintain power in spite of announcements that he had abused himself position and his family. ‘I am sorry that I will not accept the prime-minister post,’ said Thaksin at the national TV. ‘We have no time to quarrel. I want to see Thai people unite and forget what has happened.’ On Monday, Thaksin had asserted victory in the parliamentary elections and seemed unfazed by an opposition boycott that got support from 10 million voters. However, on Tuesday evening, just some hours after a contest with King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thaksin declaimed his resignation.
